How To Grow Your Own SHTF Pharmacy
By Tara Dodrill, homesteading and survival journalist and author.
Growing your own SHTF pharmacy, or perhaps more accurately, apothecary, should be near the top of your medical preps. You will not be able to call 911 or rush out to the emergency room during a doomsday disaster, you will be your own first responder. Having a natural apothecary growing on your prepper retreat or bug in location will allow you to treat a host of likely ailments that will affect you and your loved ones.
There is absolutely no reason to wait until the SHTF to start using natural remedies to treat routine medical issues and injuries. Ridding your body of potentially harmful chemicals that are commonly included in over-the-counter medications, salves, and ointments, should help you build a stronger body and help you to become more physically prepared for the demands that will be placed on it during a long-term survival scenario.

Butter is good for your skin.
The origins of butter go back thousands of years to when our ancestors first started domesticating animals. In fact, the first written reference to butter was found on a 4500- year old limestone tablet illustrating how butter was made.
In India, ghee (clarified butter) has been used as a staple food, and as a symbol of purity, worthy of offering to the gods in religious ceremonies for more than 3000 years.

Top five reasons to use goat's milk soap
Friday, June 14, 2013 by: Lance Johnson
Consumers are becoming more aware of the chemical mass production of commercial body care products that are loaded with synthetic ingredients. Possibly a symptom of an economy looking to cut costs, body care products like soap and deodorant have moved away from being "personal care" products to being personally destructive, cancer-causing silent killers. From containing hormone disrupting phthalates and poisonous triclosan, to harboring heavy metals and toxic surfactants, many mass-produced body care products have become utterly dangerous. As consumers become more aware, many people are now switching to all natural, organic products. One natural body care product that's gaining attention is goat's milk soap. Here are the five wonderful benefits of using goat's milk soap versus commercial sodium lauryl sulfate blends.
Five good reasons to start using goat's milk soap
1. Delays signs of skin aging:
Goat's milk soap delays signs of skin again due to its high content of alpha-hydroxy acids such as lactic acid. Alpha-hydroxy acids break down dead skin cell bonds, removing dead skin cells from the skin's surface and leaving behind new cells on the surface that appear smoother and more youthful.
2. Not a chemical counterfeit:
Water-based soaps on mainstream supermarket shelves use harsh chemical acids to break down dead skin cells. The lasting effect of chemical acids on the skin is more similar to a chemical "burn." Alpha hydroxyl acids found in goat's milk, work with skin instead of breaking it down and aging it further.
3. Anti-inflammatory properties:
Goat's milk reduces skin inflammation due to its fat molecule content. The cream present in goat's milk is a moisturizer, soothing dry and damaged skin, possessing an anti-inflammatory effect.
4. Loaded with essentials:
Goat's milk is packed full of essential nutrients and vitamins like vitamin D, C, B1, B6, B12, and E, that feed the skin and are absorbed into the body.
5. Treats acne:
Studies now show that goat's milk is effective for treating acne and skin conditions. This is primarily because goat's milk has anti-bacterial properties that delay the growth of microbial organisms that spur the spread of acne.
Avoid sodium lauryl sulfate
A 1983, a report from the Journal of The American College of Toxicology blamed sodium lauryl sulfate concentrations as low as 0.5 percent for causing skin irritation. Further studies showed that concentrations of 10-30 percent were found to cause severe skin corrosion. The "Household Products Directory" of the National Institutes of Health lists over 80 products that contain sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate with concentrations up to 30 percent. These high concentrations not only affect the skin's outer layers, but are absorbed into the biggest organ in the body, the skin, and stored in tissues.
Sodium laureth is now commonly used in place of sodium lauryl, but it can be even more dangerous. Laureth cannot effectively be removed from the liver. Laureth can be stored stored in tissues and promote toxicity for a person's entire lifetime, draining them of energy.
These chemical soaps are popular mainly because of price, but they aren't worth the negative, long-term draining of energy. Many consumers are finding it more important than ever to spend the extra dollar here and there to assure they have what is natural and pure, for their body and for the environment. Small farmers and manufacturers of all natural products are the future for a population which seeks to survive, healthily, happily.

Bentonite clay and Tea Tree essential oil
I'd like to share a Natural alternatives to antibiotics for an abscessed tooth.
Mix a teaspoon of clay in a small cup with warm water until you have a thick paste. Never use metal to mix, as this will destroy the “charge” of the clay.
Add one or two drops of tea tree oil and mix well. Apply to the gum between the gum and cheek, and be careful not to swallow it. You can put a small square of gauze over the clay to keep it in place. This can be left on for as long as you’re willing to have a chunk of clay in your cheek!
Then with a Q-tip apply tea tree oil directly to the swollen gum daily.
Why does this work?
1. Bentonite clay has amazing drawing properties, draws out toxins.
2. Tea Tree is a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.

Abscesses can be just under the gum and not involve the tooth at all, or they can be deep under the gum at the root of a tooth. The length of time for treatment would completely depend on how serious the abscess is. Something mild might completely clear up in a few days, but a serious infection could take daily treatment for several weeks.

My Peppermint Garden
I have been growing mint in my organic garden for a few years and I love how fast it grows and the abundance is amazing! This year I will bag up some dried peppermint and spearmint leaves and have them available for sale at the Juneteeth event coming up next month.
Enjoy the garden pictures and check out below the benefits of mint tea, you might be surprised to learn just how good this herb is for the body.
Peppermint or mint tea is a favorite flavor for many regular tea drinkers. It is commonly associated with providing a cozy treat during warm weather. In addition to being quite flavorful there are also many benefits to drinking peppermint tea. Understanding these health benefits can help you take better advantage of peppermint tea so you can improve your health.
Enjoy the garden pictures and check out below the benefits of mint tea, you might be surprised to learn just how good this herb is for the body.
The Benefits of Peppermint
1. Relieve Stomach Problems
Peppermint is considered a stomach healer that can assist with irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, stomach aches, diarrhea or constipation. People often find it easier to consume peppermint tea because it does not contain sugar like peppermint candies that may further irritate the stomach.
2. Aid Digestion
Peppermint acts as a cooling carminative that helps to relieve pain in the digestive tract by helping gas to move through your stomach and intestines after you have eaten. In many cultures peppermint will be served after you have eaten to promote bile flow so your body will digest food more easily.
3. Relieve Nausea, Fever and Cough
Herbalists claim that peppermint leaves can create a tea that will help to keep nausea at bay and remedy a “jumpy” or queasy stomach that many people feel when travelling in a car, airplane or boat. The antispasmodic qualities of peppermint can help to prevent vomiting that often comes with nausea or stomach aches in these conditions. The analgesic properties of the tea can help to calm and relax the stomach and intestinal muscles that can help to get rid of irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea or stomach cramps.
4. Boost Immune System
Many people consume peppermint tea when they are suffering from the cold or flu because it is full of calcium, vitamin B and potassium that can give the immune system a boost. Some claim that sipping peppermint tea can help keep mild asthma cases under controls, though medical professionals doubt this information. These ingredients can help to relieve the symptoms of your illness and prevent you from getting ill in the future.
5. Reduce Bad Breath
Those with bad breath can sip peppermint tea to help encourage a more pleasant smell. Drinking peppermint tea on a regular basis is claimed to help to permanently rid you of bad breath symptoms that can be uncomfortable or embarrassing.
6. Relieve Stress
The taste and smell of peppermint are known to help relieve stress. Drinking peppermint tea is found to help people sleep more easily at night because of these stress-relieving properties. Some believe that this stress relief that comes with sipping peppermint tea is linked to the immune system boost that this beverage provides.
7. According to recent research from Wheeling Jesuit University, the smell or flavor of peppermint can have profound effects on cognitive functions. These include reasoning, problem solving, concept formation, judgment, attention span, and even memory.

Other Benefits
Some claim that peppermint tea can suppress the appetite, which is helpful for those that are trying to lose weight. Others think that giving a baby peppermint tea to sip on can help to manage colic. Still others have found that drinking peppermint tea can help reduce the discomfort that is associated with headaches or migraines.

Superherbs:
5 Essential Medicinal Herbs
A functional or medicinal herb is any herb that will have a direct impact on how you feel, by targeting a specific function, from your sleep cycle to your immune system. Those with particularly potent powers are dubbed ‘superherbs,’ and they pack a punch! The following 5 medicinal herbs will impact your body and your mind in incredible ways.
Just like superfoods, superherbs are more evasive and not something you can easily find at any ol’ grocery store. They often aren’t readily available fresh, and are instead offered in powder, extract, or supplemental form. If you’re planning your spring garden, some of these are easily grown, too!
1. Echinacea
Echinacea is a group of flowers in the daisy family. They are found only in eastern and central North America. Echinacea targets the immune system and may help you to get rid of a cold. Native Americans used echinacea for numerous health woes. It has also been used to treat scarlet fever, syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning, and diphtheria. Today, it is used to shorten the duration of the common cold and flu and may help to reduce symptoms like a cough, sore throat, and fever.
2. Valerian
Valerian root is a perennial flowering plant that has sedative and anxiolytic properties. It acts as a natural sleeping remedy and much more natural than popping (addictive) sleeping pills. Studies show that valerian root can reduce the amount of time it takes you to fall asleep and also improve the quality of sleep thereafter. If you’ve expended all of your options and have tried everything but medication to fight insomnia or simply sleep better, consider valerian root.
3. Turmeric
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the same family as ginger and is native to southwest India. It is widely known as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, which is the root cause of many diseases. It has been used to treat respiratory conditions, liver disorders, anorexia, rheumatism, diabetic wounds, runny nose, cough, and sinusitis. It is also used to treat sprains and swelling, digestive disorders, and weak circulation.
4. Gingko Biloba
Feeling slow and low? Gingko biloba may be the remedy you need. It is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta, in which all other members are now extinct (ginkgo biloba is actually considered a “living fossil” for having survived several extinction periods). This product of the gingko tree is said to boost your energy levels by increasing the production of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) at the cellular level. In doing so it improves thinking, memory, and behavior. It also reduces anxiety and improves sexual energy.
5. Milk Thistle
Native to the Mediterranean region, milk thistle is part of the same flower family as sunflowers and daisies. It has been used for 2,000 years to treat liver, kidney, and gall bladder problems. It protects the liver from toxins and helps the liver to repair itself by growing new cells. These reasons make milk thistle great for treating a hangover or an essential tool in weaning off of antibiotics or other medications. Some studies suggest milk thistle is effective in stopping cancer cells from dividing and reproducing as well as in shortening the lifespan of cancer cells and reducing the blood supply to tumors.

The Latin for Cocoa Beans (Theobroma cacao) translates to ‘Food of the Gods’. The Aztecs regarded the Cacao tree as sacred and used the cocoa beans as a form of currency.
So far the only use that the Western world has had for Cocoa beans has been in the form of chocolate. However, recently the medicinal properties of cocoa butter have been
revealed and now millions of people have started to use this beautiful butter on their skin.
Benefits to the Skin:
Antioxidants – Cocoa butter is high in antioxidants that fight off free-radicals. Free Radicals can cause skin aging, dull skin and dark patches.
Deep Hydration: Cocoa butter is rich in fatty acids and hydrates the skin deeply
Sensitive Skin: cocoa butter has been shown to improve and relieve conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.
Apply cocoa butter to burns for soothing, protective and moisturizing care. When it is applied topically, Cocoa butter creates a barrier between the skin and the environment,
thus helping the skin to retain moisture.
“According to the physician education website, Wounds Research.com, cocoa butter far exceeded a placebo in relieving the itching or burning sensations that commonly attend
burn healing when it was applied with massage therapy. The benefit was noticeable as much as 80 to 165 days after injury. In November, 1998, the U.S. Patent Office granted a
patent for a product containing 75 to 100 percent cocoa butter designed to treat first- and second-degree sun or thermal burns. The product promoted 100 percent regrowth of
new skin by 8 to 9 days after injury, much more quickly than untreated burns. Many burn care products have since been marketed commercially using this cocoa butter breakthrough”.
Research indicates that massaging the skin with Cocoa Butter may help relieve stress, boost the immune system, and even prevent cancer. It is also a folk remedy for burns, dry lips,
fever, malaria, rheumatism, snakebites and wounds. It is reported to be both antiseptic and diuretic.
In order for Cocoa Butter to be as effective as possible, it should get in contact with as many of your skin cells as possible, this means rubbing it well into your skin.
Once the Cocoa Butter is absorbed it will destroy free radicals in the lower depths of your skin as soon as they are produced, and before they can do damage. It has been scientifically
proven that Cocoa Butter will prevent skin degradation due to the harmful effects of the sun.
Applied topically, Cocoa Butter immediately makes a difference to the texture of your skin, making it feel more supple and soft. It also provides instant pain relief for skin irritations.
Because it can access the skin layers so deeply, you do not have to apply Cocoa Butter more than a couple of times a day – this is an added benefit in eczema and dermatitis treatment.
Daily use will ensure that your skin is hydrated, will enforce collagen and elastin production.

A new line of soaps coming to Nile Naturals
I have been asked by my customers to create soaps that help with various skin conditions such as Eczema, Excessive oily skin, teenage out of control acne, uneven skin tone due to acne scaring, and mature aging skin issues. This new line of soaps will attempt to address the problems that are important to you.
In November 2015 I will add the following new soaps:
Turmeric & Honey Soap
What it do:Turmeric is effective in the treatment of acne due to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties that fight pimples and breakouts to provide a youthful glow to your skin. It is beneficial for oily skin as it regulates the production of sebum, an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands. Turmeric can help lighten stretch marks, and can be used in the treatment of various scalp conditions such as dermatitis and eczema and inflammation.
We added Honey to our Turmeric soap.
Acne: Honey is naturally antibacterial, so it's great for acne treatment and prevention.
Pores: Honey is clarifying because it opens up pores making them easy to unclog.
Sulfur Soap
What it do:What is Sulfur? Sulfur is a natural mineral crucial to the overall health of connective tissues, skin, bones, teeth, hair, and muscles. Known as an age-old remedy used since ancient times to cure skin conditions and various health issues, Sulfur now plays a pivotal role in skincare treatments for Acne, Eczema, and Psoriasis.
Sulfur is gentle but effective. Unlike more drying agents like Benzoyl Peroxide, Sulfur acne spot treatments will not dehydrate skin and leave it further irritated. Instead, it works to remove excess shine, and over time, help heal existing breakouts for a brighter, clearer, and noticeably smoother complexion.
Moringa Soap
What it do:Moringa has skin purifying properties and therapeutic skincare benefits. As such, it is used in the cosmetic industry. Impurities in the skin are filtered out, and your skin is rejuvenated and detoxified. The natural skin tone and color are balanced to make your skin fairer. Moringa soap can be used as a face mask treatment by making a paste with water.
The antioxidants in moringa make your skin revitalized by controlling free radicals. Free radicals cause your skin to age. The cleansing ability of moringa makes your skin youthful and radiant.
Around 30 antioxidants are contained in moringa which is delivered to the skin, being highly absorbable and makes your skin healthy.
Shea Butter , Cocoa Butter & Mango Butter Soap
What it do:
Shea Butter
Because Shea Butter has such a large healing fraction, in addition to moisturizing fraction, regular use of this natural cream can treat many skin problems, including blemishes, wrinkles, itching, sunburns, small skin wounds, eczema, skin allergies, insect bites, frost bite, and other skin conditions.
Shea butter has the ability to soothe, hydrate and balance your skin. It is used as a moisturizer for dry skin and eczema, as a dry scalp treatment, for chapped lips and to help soften cracked dry skin on heels, elbows and knees. It is important, according to the American Shea Butter Institute, to make sure unrefined shea butter is used. Raw shea butter maintains its therapeutic qualities and will keep your skin moist and supple, whereas refined, processed shea butter loses almost all of its healing properties.
Dr. Robyn Tisdale Scott, a clinical pharmacist, concurs with the American Shea Butter Institute, supporting the claim that unrefined shea butter reverses dry skin in about three days.
Cocoa Butter
Because of Cocoa Butter's natural make-up and its nutrient and fatty acid content, cocoa butter is amazing for dry skin and can actually penetrate further than the top layer of the skin, meaning it moisturises deep-down and really nourishes the skin.
Cocoa butter contains a number of different antioxidants which can kill-off a wide range of different free-radicals. In fact, cocoa butter contains a much higher antioxidant concentration then even blueberries and other superfoods.
We use cocoa butter in a wide variety of products to ensure our customers can get the impressive effects of this fantastic ingredient in a number of ways, and for a number of skincare needs.
Mango Butter
Mango butter is obtained from the kernels of the mango tree. It has a high content of stearic acid, which makes it similar to cocoa butter. Mango butter has good emollient properties and lends protection against the sun. It is said to prevent drying of the skin and formation of wrinkles. Mango butter also reduces degeneration of skin cells and restores elasticity.
The butter is very versatile with range of wonderful qualities – ability to hydrate skin for long period of times, lightening of age and sun damage spots, tightening skin and healing eczema, rashes, irritations and generally, brining back a healthy tone to skin.
So combining the best butters in the world makes a very moisturing luxury bar.
